Nudix Proteins

Nudix proteins (NUcleotide DIphosphate linked to a moiety X) incorporate several different functions including MutT a DNA repair protein. The various known Nudix proteins have low overall sequence identity but have a very well conserved 23 amino acid motif G(x5)E(x7)REU(x)EE(x)GU where x is any amino acid and U is usually a hydrophobic residue.

I am using Nudix proteins of known structure to investigate the relationships between their structure, sequence and function.

This work is being carried out in collaboration with Dr. Stephen Holbrook at LBNL who is working to solve the structures of these nudix proteins from the radiation resistant bacterium Deinococcus radiodurans that has more copies of this protein than other bacteria.
